Quality is Never an Accident

Most people see a cute puppy and think the hard work starts at birth. In reality, the most important work happens months—or even years—before a litter is even conceived. At Ironstone Goldendoodles, my breeding program is built on a foundation of "Strategic Selection."

I don't just put two dogs together; I carefully curate our breeding stock to ensure we are bettering the breed with every generation.

The Three Pillars of an Ironstone Dog

When I am looking to add a dog to my program, like Phoebe (BB), they must pass a three-pillar test:

1. Genetic and Health Clearances

Before a dog is even considered for breeding, they undergo extensive health testing. We look at:

  • DNA Panels: We test for over 200 genetic diseases common to Poodles and Golden Retrievers.

  • Structural Health: We monitor hips, elbows, and hearts to ensure the dog is physically capable of living a long, pain-free life.

  • The "BB" Example: I chose Phoebe specifically because of her clean genetic lines and her robust health markers as a Miniature Poodle.

2. Temperament: The "Charlie" Standard

A dog can be physically perfect, but if they are anxious, aggressive, or hyper-reactive, they will not be bred at Ironstone. I look for what I call the "Charlie Standard"—dogs that are:

  • Confident in new environments.

  • Highly "biddable" (they want to work with you).

  • Low-reactivity to loud noises or sudden movements.

3. Structural Integrity and Coat Quality

For Goldendoodles, the coat is key. I select breeding stock that helps ensure the wavy, low-shedding coats that families love. By choosing a high-quality Miniature Poodle like Phoebe, I can influence the size and coat texture of the future Ironstone generations, ensuring they meet the "Mini" standard our families are looking for.

Why I am Picky

I am not just breeding for "now"; I am breeding for the dog that will be your companion 10 years from today. By being incredibly selective—and sometimes saying "no" to a dog that doesn't meet our standards—I am protecting the families who trust Ironstone.

When you look at our dogs, you aren't just seeing a pet; you're seeing years of research, veterinary consultation, and a commitment to excellence.
