One of the most common questions I get as a breeder is: "How big is my puppy going to be?" With a Mini Goldendoodle, there can be a lot of variation depending on the parents, but the best way to predict the future is to look at the data.

When I brought Charlie home, I didn't just guess his growth—I tracked it. I’ve kept a weekly log of his weight and height to ensure he was growing at a healthy, steady rate. For those of you wondering what "normal" looks like for a Mini, here is Charlie’s real-life data from 8 to 13 weeks.

Charlie’s 13-Week Growth Chart

What This Data Tells Us

Charlie is on a very consistent growth curve. As a breeder, I look for "steady and slow." If a puppy’s weight spikes too fast, it can put unnecessary stress on their developing joints. Charlie’s roughly 1-lb-per-week gain is ideal for a Mini Goldendoodle.

Based on the standard "Goldendoodle Formula" (Double the weight at 4 months), I expect Charlie to land somewhere between 25 and 30 lbs as an adult.

Factors That Influence Growth

While charts are helpful, remember that every puppy is an individual.

  1. Genetics: Charlie’s parents were 22 lbs and 35 lbs. He is currently tracking right in the middle of that range.

  2. Nutrition: As I mentioned in my post about Feeding Charlie, the quality of the food matters. High-quality protein supports lean muscle rather than just fat.1

  3. Exercise: Over-exercising a puppy can actually damage growth plates.2 I keep Charlie’s walks short and focused on training rather than long-distance running.

Monitoring Health Through Growth

If Charlie had stopped gaining weight for two weeks or suddenly doubled his weight in one week, I would have been on the phone with my vet immediately. Growth isn't just about size; it’s a vital sign for overall health.

To keep Charlie on this healthy track, I use specific stainless steel scales and measuring tools that I’ve listed on my Gear Page. Keeping your own log at home is a great way to catch potential health issues before they become serious.

Monitoring his size isn't just about curiosity; it’s about prevention. Staying lean is the #1 way to avoid Common Goldendoodle Health Issues like hip dysplasia.

The Mental Growth Milestone

While his body is growing, Charlie’s brain is expanding even faster. A 12-lb puppy is a lot easier to manage than a 25-lb dog who hasn't been trained! This is why I emphasize starting the Puppy Foundations module of my Goldendoodle Academy while they are still in this small, manageable stage. For $45, you’re investing in a dog that is as well-behaved as they are healthy.

Final Thoughts

Don't obsess over every ounce, but do keep a log. Use Charlie’s chart as a general guide for your Mini Goldendoodle, but always consult with your vet to ensure your pup is on the right path.
